By A Lady - The Life & Wit of Jane Austen at Painswick Rococo Garden

Thursday 25 - Saturday 27 June 2026

By A Lady - The Life & Wit of Jane Austen comes to Painswick Rococo Garden for a witty and elegant outdoor performance celebrating one of England’s most beloved authors.

Set on the Bowling Green in the heart of the garden, this immersive production explores the life and writing of Jane Austen, weaving together her own words with favourite moments from the unforgettable characters she created, including Elizabeth, Jane, Emma, Harriet, the Dashwood sisters, Mrs Bennet, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Darcy, Captain Wentworth and Mr Collins.

Delightfully performed by Juliet Stevenson and Rachel Parris, the production is accompanied by a sparkling musical backdrop. Jane Austen’s words are penned by Deirdre Shields, directed by Judy Reaves, with music arranged and performed by David Le Page on violin and Nick Stringfellow on cello.

Originally commissioned by and presented at Stratford Literary Festival 2025, this beautifully staged show celebrates Jane Austen’s humour, sharp observations and enduring joy in the foibles of human behaviour.

The performance takes place on the Bowling Green at Painswick Rococo Garden. Guests are welcome to arrive up to 45 minutes before the start. The show is presented in two 40-minute sections with an interval.

Visitors are welcome to bring a chair or picnic blanket, along with a picnic and drinks. Cheese and charcuterie boxes featuring local produce will also be available to pre-order.

As this is an outdoor performance, visitors are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear. In the event of extreme weather, the performance will move indoors to St. Mary’s Church in Painswick. Ample free parking is available.

Juliet Stevenson and Rachel Parris appear subject to availability.
